Why I Bought it:
Because it was $29. And the color Aqua was practically screaming my name. And I had Birchbox points. And a promo code. What could go wrong!?
This is one of those cardboard palettes but I say that with no malice; I find that this palette is sturdy, well built, and fully functional. It also has a strong polarized closure that I appreciate. I also appreciate that the design team kept this palette size appropriate for the amount of shadows (10). The palette is a little thicker than necessary, but it’s not offensively thick so I really have nothing to gripe about.
Certainly, I love the summery, zebra, coral, aqua design. As much as I love fall, it’s a bit refreshing to see the colors 🙂
Finally, the mirror. Are you familiar with the plastic mirrors that can be bent and therefore distort imagery? That seems to be the case with this mirror. It is not real glass and the material does sort of hurt my eyes to look into. I’m going to be honest though… while I’m telling you what I think about the quality of the mirror, I have never understood why anyone cares about the mirror. At least I never use it. Do you?
Nude – this is a bone colored matte shade. I’m fair skinned and this shade doesn’t really appear on my so I’m thinking this will be a great shade to blend out harsh edges on some of these richer colors. It’s a little powdery but who cares!
Deep Brown – just as it sounds, this is a dark brown. This is also a matte shade and it looks sooooooooooooooo pretty in the crease or on your outer V.
Sienna – think, burnt orange (another matte, btw). This color is soooooo darn gorgeous if you pair it with the color below it on the lid (Glisten) and the Deep Brown color in the crease. I just love the edge it gives.
Warm Taupe – another matte shade, and very light in color, but this one is a great neutral blending shade. An essential in my opinion.
Vanilla – this is more of a satin shade so there is a little shimmer here. It’s not as bold as a shimmer shadow would be and I’m greatful for that! I feel it makes this color much more wearable and creates a true highlight.
Aqua – this is a beautiful satin, aqua shade that is just the loveliest statement shade. You do have to be a wee bit patient with it and build two or three layers, but it’s gorgeous.
Fresh Peach – Another gorgeous statement shade (satin, btw). I love how bright, coral this looks!
Glisten – This is the only heavy-duty shimmer shade in this palette and I love that. At first I thought this would be a statement shade but in reality it pairs so nicely with the other shades and somehow comes across just light enough that it actually enhances any color it is blended into.
Caramel – This is more of a terracotta matte shade and probably the only one in the palette that I wasn’t excited about at first. But then I started playing with it and the formula is just so creamy that it blends out beautifully against any of the other brown shades.
Gold Bar – Exactly how it sounds, this is a rich gold shade. I think the satin formulation gives this shade more wearability and I’ve actually had a lot more fun with this shade than I expected.
These are over primer, of course. Unfortunately, the Vanilla and Gold Bar shades did not show up as well as I would have liked but in truth they are more highlight type colors so they are not bright anyway. Nude is nearly invisible no matter what but it is a good shade to help clean up edges.
You MUST use a primer or base with these or they will not show up as bold or last very long. But I always use a primer anyway so I’m very happy with the results I got. I feel that all of these shades are very wearable for any season despite the summer-ish packaging; and in fact I’ve been wearing this palette nonstop since I got it. You will definitely be seeing this in my October favorites posting. I love the matte/shimmer balance and I feel that for the most part these are very silky, very pigmented shades. For a $29 palette, I am very impressed and I look forward to purchasing more palettes from this brand in the future.
Do you own any ABH palettes? What do you think of them/the line?
