I did not expect to fall in love with these lip balm/crayon/stain things. In fact. due to my not so pleasant experience with the Wet N Wild $1 lipsticks, I didn’t expect to even like these at all. However, I had a store credit and an hour to kill and CVS was running a B1G1 50% off on Wet N Wild. Plus these were just $2.99 each, so that’s that.
Fast forward to my real experience: WTF. These lip stains are AMAZING!
I would consider these lip stains sheer (more like a lip butter) upon initial application; but at the same time they are remarkably pigmented, and as they dry (and do their staining business) they become quite opaque. “Slick” is really the best word I can think of to describe the application of these balm stains. They are pleasant to apply and sooooooooo lightweight. They almost feel like a gloss even (think NYX butter gloss), but with the true staying power of a stain (especially #127 A Stiff Pink) and minus the stickiness.
Now, just so you are warned. This stuff STAINS. Those swatches on my hand? Didn’t wash off until halfway through the day. So definitely take care when you apply this to your lips. But with that having been said, the product stays where you put it. It doesn’t run or bleed or feather, so much to my excitement, you don’t need a lip liner!
Don’t you just love those names!? How whity!
I wish, wish, wish, wish that these lip stains appeared as true to color in the photographs of my lips as they are in person but they simply don’t. The swatches on my hand, on the other hand (haha), are a lot more on par with what actually appeared on my lips so I’m thinking it’s just my fault for taking pictures in a bathroom with crap lighting at 9 pm. Sorry! I won’t do it again, I swear!
However, in spite of technicalities, for $2.99 go get you one, girl! You won’t be disappointed.
In terms of packaging, I’m also quite impressed. No, it’s nothing spectacular or unique, but for the price I’m surprised to find the packaging right on par with lippies 2 or even 3 times the price. Each lippie twists up from the bottom so you don’t have to worry about sharpening them. Also, I really appreciate how the lid clicks into place. I can let these hang out in my purse without fear that the lid popping off!
And I am just soooo happy that there is no taste or funky scent like there was on $1 lipsticks Wet ‘N Wild sales. The only thing I can think of that may be a deal breaker for some is just a very slight, slight menthol tingle. But, again, it’s very slight and it doesn’t last too long. Personally, I think it makes my lips feel “fresh” if that makes any sense and I actually enjoy it 🙂
My one complaint: I feel like these change color as they dry. I favor the initial look of Rico Mauve (Bahahah, get it? Rico Suave? Too stinkin’ funny). But as the color adjusts to my lips it turns to a pink very similar to the A Stiff Pink shade. It’s still a very pretty shade, so it’s not upsetting enough that I will stop using or return these products. But you know. If I pick a color, I want that color. Fair, right?
Final Verdict: Buy one. Buy them all. Get one in every color.
