Can we take a moment to appreciate the packaging here!? The only thing more gaudy than an eyeshadow palette with the picture of naked man on the cover, subtext that reads “size matters” and then 9 big-ass pans of product to prove it, is a reviewer that actually has the God-awful nerve to take pictures of condoms in the background.
Well this is awkward.
Before you ask, no this post was not sponsored by Trojan; Size matters, it’s true, but you also have to work with what you have! And obviously we have lots of condoms. And a knack for really bad puns.
I actually scored this beast on Hautelook last Fall for somewhere around $20, which is pretty freaking awesome considering it retails for $42. Which reminds me, Urban Decay will be on Hautelook* today at 11 PM EST. Let the madness begin. Just sayin.
And I know, I know, I need another all matte palette like a need a hole in the head, but look at those color options, you guys! When was the last time you saw an all matte palette with yellow, pink, navy, purple and such a stark white!? Um, never.
But, as I’m sure you can tell by looking at the barely used pans, it’s taken me quite awhile to warm up to this palette. In truth, I think I’ve only used it 4-5 times in the past 6 months… not because the quality isn’t there (pigmented, long wearing, easy to blend)… I’m just so used to working with neutrals that I lack inspiration when I look at it. Well, that is until yesterday…
I think I’ve finally found the perfect palette to pair it with: the Urban Decay Ammo Palette. Yeah, the one that’s for sale on the Ulta website for just $16! I did a full review [here] if you’re interested but basically it’s a straight up shimmer palette that contains 10 of Urban Decays best selling shadows of all time… And what goes better with a colorful all matte palette than a colorful all shimmer palette!? NOTHING!
The odd color selection within this palette is both a pro and a con. On the one hand, you have matte shades that are hard (if not impossible) to find in any other palette; but on the other hand, it can be difficult to create a cohesive look with just this palette alone.
Beyond that, the quality is just what you would expect from TheBalm, rivaling companies such as Urban Decay and Too Faced for a place in my favorite brands to buy eyeshadow from.
DO YOU NEED IT?
The respective answer is:
- You are looking for something fun to replace your typically neutral transition shades
- You need more matt(e) in your life 😉
- You love colorful shadows in general
- You are looking to buy your first all matte palette (you might get more use out of something that is more versatile such as the Tartelette [here] or the Kat Von D Shade+Light Eye Contour Palette [here])
- You wear neutral shadows 99% of the time
- You don’t like matte eyeshadow (duh)
Alright ladies and beasts, I hope you guys have enjoyed my review and bad-ass photography skills! Please subscribe if you aren’t, and as always I welcome any questions/comments/requests/links to reviews of this palette if you have them in the comments section below!
