Since I started maternity leave I’ve obviously been spending more time in the house than usual. Consequently I’ve gotten reacquainted with a lot of my stuff and have come to realize that I’ve got a lot of it. I’ve also been watching more YouTube (minimalist channels and/or orientated videos) and while I’ve still got too much on my TBR list to include KonMari, I get the gist: don’t keep things you don’t like and/or don’t use.
So I whittled my nail polish collection down from 26 to 7 polishes (you can check out my Poshmark if you’re interested in snagging my rejects for super cheap) and today I thought it would be fun to share with you which ones I kept and why!
WHY 7 NAIL POLISHES?
I wasn’t aiming for 7; the goal was to actually have 12 (one for each month). The funny thing is when you restrict yourself from keeping things you MIGHT use (just in case) and only allow yourself to keep the ones you actually do use, you might be surprised just how freeing it is.
- Wasting time sifting through 50 bottles to find the same ol’ same ol’
- Spending an hour doing a mani with a polish you forgot chips in 2 seconds and having to turn around and do another mani the next day
- Or worse, walking around with smudged/chipped/streaky nails or a color you detest on your skintone because you just don’t have time to do your nails more than once a week (me)
HOW TO DECIDE WHICH TO KEEP & WHICH TO TOSS?
It’s not nearly as difficult as you would think. If the idea of wearing the polish for a month straight made me sad or indifferent, it had to go. But if it made me happy or excited, I kept it.
THE LAST OF THE MOHEAKINS
All of the polishes that I kept last at least 3 days without chipping on me which in my world is awesome. If I’m not picking a booger out of my toddler nose (TMI?), I’m cleaning something or typing (a lot… I work in an office) so 3 days is an eternity in my world!
1│CULT – Belmont Shore
Personally, I think pink is a staple in any nail polish collection, but I love this shade especially for the Spring. It’s spunky, but without getting into Malibu Barbie territory which is a fine line in vibrant pink land and one I’d rather not cross!
2│Julep – Elisa
Another Spring shade for me, although as much as I love it, it’s not one that I would repurchase. Why? Because as much as I enjoy the color itself, I hate that it requires 3 coats and can still be pretty streaky.
3│Wet n Wild – Wear Skinny Jeans
I love Wet n Wild’s seasonal polishes when I want something trendy but don’t want to spend a lot of money to get it. This was part of the Limited Edition Spring 2015 collection and I love how opaque and long lasting it is (especially for just $3.99).
4│Floss Gloss – Lean
This was my first year using this brand/polish and it’s already 50% empty! I especially love how florescent this shade is (perfect for Summer) yet super shiny (which is rare as most florescent type shades dry matte).
5│Julep – DeAnn
Fall is my favorite season so it goes without saying that whatever nail polish I use for that time is a big deal; enter DeAnn. Again, used this sooo much last Fall and it’s 50% gone. I have a feeling this will be the first nail polish I’ve ever repurchased…
Side Note: I know the swatch for DeAnn sucks as it’s literally one finger in low light… so here’s a link to Julep’s picture on the interwebs. It looks legit.
6│Julep – Josephine
This is the only nail polish out of this lot that I kept against my better judgement. Until last week I had never worn it, but I actually love it! Depending on the light it can look black, greenish-gray or just as you see it pictured. Great unique shade for the Fall!
7│Wet n Wild – I Red a Good Book
I particularly love this for the Holidays, but if I could only own one nail polish for the rest of my life, this would be it. It’s festive, sure, but there is just something about a bright red that makes me feel so feminine too! So it’s not unusual for me to wear this one year round.
All the swatches used for this post today were stolen from my Instagram. Oddly enough, the 7 polishes that I have chosen to keep are the ONLY colors you see me wear on my Instagram in the 2 years that I’ve had it… I definitely did not do that on purpose, but that’s pretty much all the proof I need that I did a GREAT job on this declutter!
I’m not going to lie, while it feels really good to open up my medicine cabinet and just grab a shade to go, I do still feel like I’m missing a few things. In the future I will be on the lookout for the following shades:
- Black (for when I get sick of wearing too much color in Spring and Summer)
- Nude (for when I get sick of color in general or need something more professional)
- Pale Pink or Blue (just to see if I can pull it off)
- Gray (because it’s my life and I do what I want)
